Two
teams from Boston University participated in the 2003 COMAP Mathematical
Modeling competition. Their entries achieved Meritorious and Honorable
Mention ratings by the judges. Over 600 teams from around the world
competed, submitting papers attacking open-ended modeling problems.
This year's problems involved designing a landing pad for a motorcycle
driving stunt man out of cardboard boxes, optimizing a gamma knife
radiation therapy treatment and organizing screening of airline
luggage. Teams of three undergraduates had 3 days to research, create
and evaluate models for the problem of their choice. Students will
be presenting their models in the RUMBUS
meeting at BU on March 22. Meritorious is the second highest finish
possible putting this team in the top 1/6th of those participating
(Team members were Michael Coleman, Justin Occhiogrosso and Pradeep
Mouli).
Honorable Mention is the top half of participants (Team members
Lauren Davis, Richard Laskey and Melissa Vellela).
Congratulations
for an excellent showing!
