Software by Robert L. Devaney
JAVA APPLETS
Much of the software written by Professor Devaney and his students for
the Macintosh in the early 1990's (and described below) has now been
rewritten in Java. Consequently, this software is now platform
independent. At least, theoretically...
To find these new versions, go to the Dynamical Systems and Technology Project
Website and click your way to the Java applets. Not all of the
old software is currently available in this format, but most of it
will soon be.....

This software is intended as a companion to the author's undergraduate
text A First Course in Chaotic Dynamical Systems.
System Requirements include:
- Macintosh computer running System 6.0.5 or higher
- Math Coprocessor recommended
The labs are designed to be easy to use. No familiarity with the
Macintosh is presumed.
Included in the software package are six stand-alone labs arranged in
increasing order of difficulty of the underlying mathematical concepts.
- Lab 1: Iteration. Displays orbits of one dimensional maps (functions)
as lists, multiple lists, time series, and histograms.
- Lab 2: Graphical Analysis. Performs graphical analysis (web diagrams)
on each of the functions in Lab 1. Allows the user to zoom in and out on
portions of the graph.
- Lab 3: Orbit Diagram. Displays the orbit or bifurcation diagrams
of the families of functions in Labs 1 and 2. Allows instantaneous
zooms in and out, and records a succession of zooms.
- Lab 4: Fractals. Displays the attractor of iterated function systems
defined by planar contractions. Allows rotations but not shears.
- Lab 5: Julia sets. Computes Julia sets of quadratic, cubic,
trigonometric and exponential functions. Allows successive zooms
that are recorded for easy playback. Displays orbits of seeds selected
with mouse.
- Lab 6: Mandelbrot set. Displays Mandelbrot set. Allows user to zoom
in and out quickly. User may display orbit of 0 for paramter values
selected by mouse. User may also select parameter value from Mandelbrot
set and then display corresponding Julia set.

The same as the above package, but only containing labs 5 and 6.
