Hello Everyone,

Here's some information on homework and discussion sections for MA225.

Each week the homework assignment will be due during the discussion section. The last possible time I will accept your homework will be at the end of the last discussion section, Tuesday at 4:30pm. Please note that homework cannot be turned into my mailbox or Prof. Blanchard's mailbox, nor can homework be slipped under my door or Prof. Blanchard's door. In other words, make sure you hand your homework directly to me.

The homework cover sheet is available on the course website. I suggest printing out a copy of the cover sheet and making about 8 or 9 copies. Homework will not be accepted without a cover sheet stapled to the front. Please do not fold the corners to keep your papers together nor use paper ripped out of a notebook. There is a stapler in the math office, MCS 142, if you do not have one and neatness of your work counts.

Homework will be graded on a 0-10 scale. If you do the problem correctly and show your work, you will receive full credit. Additionally, you may receive partial credit for doing the correct steps even if you get the wrong answer. However, for the grader to know that you did the correct steps, you must show your work. I suggest you write out as much as you can. Writing the problem number and the statement of the problem, does not count as showing your work.

All students are required to hand in ALL homework assignments. Your homework grade makes up 10% of your final grade. Use your homework as a time to make mistakes, and learn how to fix them. Doing homework problems is a way to see what you have learned from lecture. Having me do them for you is not. You are expected do the problems PRIOR to discussion, and then bring any questions you might have to the discussion. As a result, during each discussion section, I will ask for questions to discuss and work out. Please be sure to ask questions during the section if you do not understand. Once you learn how a problem was solved, you should be sure to write up the problem on your own to see if you really understand it. If you need more help, you can come to me in office hours or see one of the TA's in the tutoring room. If you need more practice, you can do problems that weren't assigned. In short, please take the time to learn how to solve the homework problems so that your performance on exams is strong.

Feel free to stop by my office hours in MCS 258. They are Monday 11:00 am-12:00 pm and Tuesday 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm. Also, I will be in the tutoring room on Mondays from 2 pm - 3 pm. Thanks very much and good luck. Tom
