^* On page 811 right after the proof of the theorem, Stewart mentions the gradient vector. We will learn about the gradient vector next week. For now, simply ignore his reference to it. You do not need to know about the gradient vector to study local extrema (max or min).

If you are curious about why the second derivative test works the way that it does, you can read the proof in Appendix E. However, I think that you would learn more by trying the "Discovery Project" on pages 821 and 822.
