To MR. MICHAEL MAYFIELD
Old King Mole is a merry old soul,
and a merry old chemistry soul is he.
He called for his compounds,
and he called for his solutions,
and he called for his students, all 6.02x10^23.
Every student they had a periodic table,
and a very fine periodic table had they.
For there are none so rare, as Old King Mole,
Not even earthy Gadolinium, Promethium, and Thulium compare.
For Old King Mole has a full shell of electrons,
Just like helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radons.
Zipping around in excited energy states,
He expounds on each chemical's traits.
Putting beakers, test tubes, and pestles in trees,
He is the living embodiment of chemistry!
His students in AP Chem are we,
And Old King Mole will forever their favorite teacher be!

and sent to Mr. Michael Mayfield,
AP Chemistry teacher at Downers Grove South High School, Illinois,
1972-2004.
It was an amazing privilege to take your AP Chemistry
course during the 1980-1 school year.
The poem is spoken to the rhyme pattern of Old King Cole.)
