Software dedicated for being used with the Web is dubbed, appropriately,
browsers. Some that you may have heard of are Lynx
and Mosiac. The browser that is available for your use
in the Math department is called Netscape. To use it on
a Sun workstation type the following:
math joe % netscape &
If you are using a vt220 ascii terminal, you will need to use
Lynx:
math joe % lynx &
The URL to get to the Math Department's home page is
http://math.bu.edu. You will notice that there are some items that
are underlined in the home page. These are called hyperlinks. By
simply pointing to this underlined word or phrase with the mouse
and clicking once with the left mouse button, you will automatically
be linked to another document which has more detailed information
about the word or phrase that was underlined. This new document,
in turn, may have some of its own hyperlinks. If at any time you
want to get back to a previous document that you were browsing,
you can point the mouse to the box at the bottom of the window that
has the word Back in it. You can keep clicking this button
until you get to the point where you want to stop. Similarly, clicking
on the Forward button will go forward to the links that
you selected previously. If you would like to go to a completely
new URL, you can select the Open.. button and then type
in the URL that you want to go to. However, the URL must be in one
of the formats discussed in the next section. If at anytime you
want to quit Netscape, no matter where you are on the Web (France,
Japan, Australia), just go under the File menu and select
Quit.
