Course Description: Prereq: MA 711 or consent of the instructor. Hyperbolic, elliptic, parabolic equations, characteristics, separation of variables, eigenvalue problems, Fourier techniques, Sobolev spaces, potential theory, and an introduction to pseudodifferential operators.

The textbook for this course is Partial Differential Equations by L. C. Evans, published by the AMS. The outline on the back of thi page refers to the sections in this text. Because this course was scheduled late the book is not available in the bookstore but can be purchased online through the AMS bookstore.

Grading: Your grade will based entirely on the homework assignments which will be due about every two weeks. Your work in this course is governed by BU's Academic Conduct Code (http://www.cs.bu.edu/ugradprogram/conduct.html) which you are expected to be familiar with and abide by. However, I encourage you to work together on the homework assignments since I feel that this is the best way to learn this material. After you have discussed and worked through the problems each person should then write up his or her own solutions. If you have any questions about whether or not some sort of collaboration is permissible please don't hesitate to come and talk it over with me.
