Images of India - Red Fort

(Click on an image for a larger view.)

The red fort was originally built by Shah Jahan. (Maybe you haven't heard of him, but you've surely heard of something else he is responsible for, the Taj Mahal!) The size is immense. There is a huge wall surrounding the area, but despite that once you are inside, the area the wall encompasses is so large, there are many places you cannot even see the wall.
Up
Dave, in front (and quite a distance from) the entrance to the red fort.
A closer view of the entrance.
One of the towers outside the wall.
Looking across the courtyard to the main building where court was held.
Inside the court building. This is where Shah Jahan would sit. Off to the side, there is a stone carved grill where women would have been able to watch the proceedings without being seen by the men. This is very typical for the Muslim rulers of the time, and you see these stone carved screens everywhere in their palaces.
A mosque, built by the 'evil' son of Shah Jahan, who killed his three brothers and imprisoned his father so he could take the throne.
Some of the nice marble inlay work we saw.
To keep the palace cool, water would flow from the back and through this trench. They were very clever.
A deep bathtub where rulers could 'have a bath' with their wives.
Beautiful arch work.
A nice view through the garden.
