Responses to Suggestions for Math 123
- Comment: I'd just like to say that I'm very glad that you plan on
teaching both sides of equations, not only the number side, but also the
graph side. That was one of the things my calc teacher in high school was
always very good about and it makes me feel at home.
- Response: I'm glad to hear this! It is often the case that problems
which are not easy to solve merely though calculation can easily be solved by
looking at its graph or vice-versa.
- Comment: This not really a comment, but a question as to how much this
course will cover... How far will we go progress into the text?
- Response: We will do up to the section on the Fundamental Theorem of
Calculus and perhaps a bit more, depending upon how much time we have left.
- Comment: Personally, I found limits quite difficult, However I don't
find derivatives as challanging, does any of the material become less
abstract as the semester continues?
- Response: The level of abstraction and difficulty will vary from topic
to topic. We will be working with fairly concrete problems while we focus
upon derivatives and its applications. Later on, we will see that, for
example, integration can be quite abstract. Yes, limits will return again!
- Comment: I really enjoy the fact that each class reviews the
previous material from lectures and enforces
that knowledge before moving ahead to any new material.
- Response: Thanks for mentioning this. There is always tension between
finishing up new material and tying it in with older material -- I'm striving
to attain a happy medium.
