CAS MA 113 C1 Elementary Statistics

Meets MWF 12pm-1pm at CAS 316

Discussions are on Mondays: C2 2pm-3pm at SOC B57, C3 3pm-4pm at CAS 235, C4 4pm-5pm at PSY B45

L-28 5.2 (started, as well as the topic has been explained from another source)

L-27 Review (quiz-4 dedicated)

L-26 Ch.5 (up to p.189). The third (= the last) portion of HW-4: 5.6 ## 4,5,7,8,9,11,17. The first two parts of HW-4 are below (see lectures 23, 25). Quiz 4 (Wed, 11/18) tests Ch.3 (normal approximation to the binomial), Ch.4, and 5.1 of Ch.5.

L-25 Ch.5 (up to 184) and the mean of the binomial random variable recalled. Normal approximation to the binomial will be tested on Quiz 4 (since it has not been tested on Quiz 3). More HW-4 ## are 5.6: 1,2,3

L-24 Ch.4 finished, Ch.5 started (up to p.179)

L-23 Chebyshev's Theorem (not in the book), and an example of its application. (First part of) HW-4, from the book, 4.5: 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,11

L-22 More on relation between a probability model and a relative frequency histogram (not from the book) and on CLT

L-21 Chapter 4 started (up to Example 4.4)

Chapter 3 reviewed.

Quiz-3 is on Wed, 10/28. It covers Ch.3. More 3.9 HW-3 problems are 28,29,32,35. Also, the 113HW-3 (doc-file) is posted (there are six problems in it as well as ALL 3.9 HW-3 ## are listed in it).

L-20 Chapter 3 finished. Continuity correction described in more detail than it is in the text.

L-19 3.5 up to (the bottom of) p.118; NOT FROM OUR BOOK: mean and variance for a continuous variable defined. QUIZ-3 is on Wed, 10/28; it covers Ch.3

2nd part of HW-3: from the book, 3.9 ## 15,16,18,22,23

L-18 3.4 finished, 3.5 started; the mean and the variance for a random variable are defined (and justified), which preludes (logically) p.108 formulas (3.8); in 3.5 the "probability density" introduced (as part of the standard terminology)

L-17 Section 3.3 finished, 3.4 started (up to p.105)

L-16 Chapter 3 (up to the notion of a random variable). (1st part of) HW-3: from the book, 3.9 ## 1,4,5,6,10,11,13.

L-15 Chapter 3 (up to p.97)

L-14 Chapter 3 started (up to the Conditional Probability part)

2.6 number 7 is added to the list of HW-2 problems. Quiz 2 is scheduled for Wed, October 7.

L-13 Review, quiz 2 related questions taken. No new HW

L-12 Chapter 2 finished. The quiz 2 problems will be similar to HW problems and/or the textbook examples.

L-11 Up to p.41

L-10 Up to p.27 (and more). More HW-2 problems (from the text). 2.6: 1,2,5,7,8,10,18,20

L-9 Up to p.20, HW-2 posted. Wed, October 7, is the most likely Quiz 2 date.

L-8 An alternative formula for the variance, 1.3 (part of) presented

L-7 1.2 finished, 1.3 started; no new HW, yet.

L-6 (Most parts of) 1.1, 1.2 presented.

L-5 The Review finished, questions taken. Quiz 1 on Wed. Statistics starts on Fri.

L-4 The Review is almost finished. A few more problems are added to HW-1; round to the nearest tenth: a) -3.847 b) 3.851

round to the nearest hundred: a) 2,136.9 b) -2161.3

Solve the inequality (and graph the solution on the line): a) -7 less than y-2 less than 5 b)abs.value of (5x+0.5) - 2 is less than 5

L-3 The Review is not finished, yet. Quiz 1 is scheduled for Wed, 9/16

L-2 Proceeded with the review, HW-1 is posted (the doc-file on this very site)

L-1 The course arrangement presented, HS elementary algebra review started; no HW, yet

Reading and understanding of the text in the respective section goes each time as part of the HW. HW problems are assigned weekly. You are asked to submit the homework on the day of the quiz (so you can use your own homework as part of your notes on each quiz). Quiz problems are similar to those from the HW, to the text examples (or/and to the examples presented by the Instructor).

Grading Policy: attendance is 1 unit worth; HW is to be submitted with each quiz, it is 1 unit; each quiz is 1 unit worth; the final (in December, the date to be specified) is 4 units worth. The two lowest units will be dropped. The average of the remaining scores will determine the grade for the class.
