The Class' emphasis will be on developing ANALYTICAL SKILLS of students. The course OUTLINE is below. Reading and understanding of the text in the respective section goes each time WITHOUT SAYING as part of the HW. HW problems are assigned daily, you are encouraged to turn them in (though you are not getting formal credit for doing so). Test problems are more or less similar to those from the text (or to the examples presented by the Instructor). The students are expected to learn (with an ability to apply to solve test problems) different algebraic and trigonometric notions as well as get a better training in logical thinking. The emphasis is on DOING mathematics rather than duplicating mathematics through extensive drill.
Grading Policy: Attendance is 1 units worth, the quiz (on Fri, 9/21) is 1 unit, two tests (Oct 19, Nov 16) are 2 units each, the FINAL (Dec 15, 3pm-5pm) is 4 units worth. The lowest of these 10 grades will be dropped. The average of the remaining 9 will determine the grade for the class.
The course covers Chapters 1 through 7 of College Algebra and Trigonometry by Aufmann, Barker, Nation, (6th edition, ISBN 13:978- 0-618-82515-8) as well as some of the Appendices.
This includes:
Chapter 1. Fundamental Concepts: the real number system, polynomials, rational expressions.
Chapter 2. Equations and Inequalities: linear equation, quadratic and other equations, inequalities, absolute values inequalities and equations.
Chapter 3. Functions and Graphs: a two-dimensional coordinate system, functions, graphs, inverse functions, applications.
Chapter 4. Polynomial and Rational Functions.
Chapter 5. Exponential and Logarithmic Functions.
Chapter 6. Trigonometric Functions.
Chapter 7. Trigonometric Identities and equations.
