Meets MTR 6-8.30pm at MCS B33

The Class' emphasis will be on developing ANALYTICAL SKILLS of students (the subtitle of the text is Concepts and Contexts). Reading and understanding of the text in the respective section goes each time WITHOUT SAYING as part of the HW. It is responsibility of the students to know the provisions of the CAS Academic Conduct code, copies of which are available in CAS 105.

As soon as one takes the final, the new formula will be applied:

(w1+w2+w3+w4)/2 +q1+q2+q3+3*mt+5*f+a, this makes 14 units, from which you have to drop two UNITS (as has been explained on Mon), then divide by 12 and check against the scale. If your grade is not in the interval, it is OK to go down (but to go up, you have to e-mail me).

The attendance a = 4 - n*0.2 where n is the # of "half-meetings" missed

L-13: 8.5 (omit ex.3) HW: 3,5-17 odd. 8.6 (in view of Q-3 pay more attention to differentiation), omit ex.4 and ex.8. 8.7 (Theorems 8,9; inequality 14, and the last subsection, not yet covered; Example 8b will be omitted). 8.8 not included. HW 8.9; 3,5. QUIZ 3 covers 8.4-8.7 and very little from 8.9.

The course covers Chapters 5 through 8 of Calculus (Single Variable) by J. Stewart (starting from Section 5.5) as well as some of the Appendices.

This includes:

Chapter 5: the substitution rule, integration by parts, method of partial fractions, integration using tables, approximate integration, improper integrals.

Chapter 6: more about areas, volumes, arc length, applications.

Chapter 7: modeling with differential equations, direction fields, Euler's method, separable equations, exponential growth and decay, the logistic equation.

Chapter 8: sequences, series, convergence-divergence tests, power series, Taylor and Maclaurin series, applications.

Homework is assigned on a regular basis. Designated assignements are collected and graded.

Exams: there is one in-class Midterm Exam (during the week # 4), three Quizzes, and the (cumulative) Final (given on the last day of classes, 8/10).

Grading Policy:

Attendance: 1 unit; Designated HWs: 2 units; Midterm : 3 units; Quizzes: 3 units (one unit each); Final: 5 units.

The lowest two from these 14 grades will be dropped. The average from the remaining 12 will determine the grade for the class.
