Hello all,

Here's some information on homework and discussion sections.

Homework will be due at 5:30 on Tuesday afternoons, no later. You must turn in homework to me during my office hours (Tuesdays 1:00-2:00 and 4:30-5:30 in MCS B42) or at the beginning or end of any discussion section, but please do not interrupt the middle of a discussion section to turn in your homework. Homework cannot be turned in to my mailbox or Prof. Blanchard's mailbox, nor can homework be slipped under my door or Prof. Blanchard's door. Please make sure you hand your homework directly to me at one of the times above.

The homework cover sheet is available on the course website. I suggest printing out a copy of the cover sheet and making about 8 or 9 copies. Homework will not be accepted without a cover sheet stapled to the front. Please do not tear the corners to keep your papers together. There is a stapler in the math office, MCS 142, if you do not have one. I always kept a little stapler in my backpack, and it was quite handy for me and many of my friends, in MA 225 and beyond. In fact, I still keep one there! I would recommend the investment.

Homework will be graded on a 0-10 scale. If you do the problem correctly and show your work, you will receive full credit. Additionally, you may receive partial credit for doing the correct steps even if you get the wrong answer. However, for the grader to know that you did the correct steps, you must show your work. I suggest you write out as much as you can. Writing the problem number and the statement of the problem, does not count as showing your work.

I will drop your lowest homework grade. Your homework grade makes up 10% of your final grade. Use your homework as a time to make mistakes, and learn how to fix them. Doing homework problems is a way to see what you have learned from lecture. Having me do them for you is not. You should do problems PRIOR to discussion, and then bring your questions to discussion to see where you went wrong. Don't just sit back and wait for all of the problems to be worked out for you. It is important that when we go over a problem in discussion, that you know how the problem was solved. Once you learn how a problem was solved, you should be sure to write up the problem on your own to see if you really understand it. If you need more help, you can come to me in office hours or see one of the TA's in the tutoring room. If you need more practice, you can do problems that weren't assigned. The idea is this. If you don't know how to solve a problem, and you don't take the time to learn how to solve the problem in discussion or office hours, you won't know how to solve the problems on the exams. And the exams make up almost all of your grade.

If you need help, feel free to stop by my office hours in MCS B42. They are Tuesdays 1:00-2:00 and 4:30-5:30. I will have tutoring room hours, but I don't know what they are yet. When they become available, I'll let you know.

Take care and good luck!
