INSTRUCTIONS FOR HOMEWORK
DO's
- Use 8.5 x 11 paper, or an equivalent size on a electronic tablet. White or yellow color paper (unbleached is fine, but no
other colors or sizes).
- Write your name, BU ID number, and discussion section time and
number (e.g., Discusion 226 A3 Weds. 12:20-1:10)
clearly at the top left corner
of the 1st page and number the
pages.
- Leave space. Extra space between problems, around formulas and even
between lines makes your paper much more readable.
- Use lined paper unless you are very good a writing straight and with a consistent
size without lines.
- Always write in complete sentences. Even (in fact, especially) the
equations should be part of sentences. Please use notation as appropriate
(i.e., y=2x is fine and should NOT be written "y equals two times x",
the "=" symbol is the verb).
Good tests are to ask yourself "Is this like it is written in the text?"
or
"If I read exactly what I have written, in order, no added words, to
someone over the phone, would they understand?"
- Collaborate!! Working on problems with a classmate is a great way to learn. Please be sure to write out solutions by yourself. The idea here is that even if you worked on a problem with another person, you should be able to explain it yourself without any notes!
DON'Ts
- DO NOT: Hand in pages out of order.
- DO NOT: Crowd your work, write tiny near the end of a problem
or write up the side of the page (just go on to the next page).
- DO NOT: Hand in sloppy work.
- DO NOT: Copy answers from another person or from an internet source. This is academically dishonest. If I suspect cheating I reserve the right to ask a student to come to my office and explain the problem orally with no notes.
Grading Guidlines
The homework problems will be graded using the following 6-point system adapted from Prof. Chad Topaz, of Williams College:
- Mathematical content (4 points)
- 4 points - The solution is 100% correct.
- 3 points - The solution shows a good understanding of the problem but there are some minor mistakes and/or typos present.
- 2 points - The solution is incorrect but has some good ideas in it.
- 1 points - A serious effort has been made on the problem
- 0 points - Only a trivial, or no effort has been made
- Communication (2 points) These will only be assigned if you get 2 points or higher on the mathematical content portion.
- 2 points - The solution is clearly written, well-organized, and justified with sufficient detail.
- 1 point - The solution is readable, but is missing details or is hard to follow in places.
- 0 points - The solution is unreadable, or has is missing many details.
Solution sets will be posted on blackboard along and your problem sets will be graded on gradescope one to two weeks after the due date.
Gradescope
After writing out your homework neatly and following the guidelines above. Using a document scanner or an app on your mobile device, clearly (and in good light) scan your homework as a PDF and upload via Gradescope. This portal can be accessed by going to the course Blackboard page , and clicking on the "Homework turn-in" tab. Find the relevant homework assignment and submit your homework before the due date, (which is each Thursday at 9:00am). Make sure to label each homework problem on the PDF in the Gradescope interface. This will help the graders immensely (and put them in a much better mood when grading your homework).
