INSTRUCTIONS FOR HOMEWORK

DO's

• Use 8.5 x 11 paper, or an equivalent size on a electronic tablet. White or yellow color paper (unbleached is fine, but no other colors or sizes).
• Write your name, BU ID number, and discussion section time and number (e.g., Discusion 226 A3 Weds. 12:20-1:10) clearly at the top left corner of the 1st page and number the pages.
• Leave space. Extra space between problems, around formulas and even between lines makes your paper much more readable.
• Use lined paper unless you are very good a writing straight and with a consistent size without lines.
• Always write in complete sentences. Even (in fact, especially) the equations should be part of sentences. Please use notation as appropriate (i.e., y=2x is fine and should NOT be written "y equals two times x", the "=" symbol is the verb). Good tests are to ask yourself "Is this like it is written in the text?" or "If I read exactly what I have written, in order, no added words, to someone over the phone, would they understand?"
• Collaborate!! Working on problems with a classmate is a great way to learn. Please be sure to write out solutions by yourself. The idea here is that even if you worked on a problem with another person, you should be able to explain it yourself without any notes!

DON'Ts

• DO NOT: Hand in pages ripped from spiral note books.
• DO NOT: Use paperclips or "dog-ear" papers together.
• DO NOT: Hand in pages out of order.
• DO NOT: Crowd your work, write tiny near the end of a problem or write up the side of the page (just go on to the next page).
• DO NOT: Hand in sloppy work.
• DO NOT: Copy answers from another person or from an internet source. This is academically dishonest. If I suspect cheating I reserve the right to ask a student to come to my office and explain the problem orally with no notes.

Grading Guidlines

Two problems will be graded for completion, accuracy and presentation (4 points each) using the rubric below, the rest of the points (2 points) are for completion of the other problems.
• (4 pts): Pristine, solutions are written up correctly, coherently, and in complete sentences
• (3 pts): Very nicely done, solutions are written up coherently and in complete sentences, and are mostly correct
• (2 pts): Problems are complete and in OK form.
• (1 pt): Solution is incomplete, and written up poorly.
• (0 pt): Non-existent, to very, very poor.... :(
