Instructions for Lab 4:
For the final lab, you have a choice of doing one of the
projects below. For both labs:
- Work in groups of 2 to 4.
- Due on the last day of class.
AM Radio:
Design and build a radio to receive the signal from AM 1030
(That is, the signal has a frequency of 1030 KiloHertz or
period of 1/1,030,000 seconds.)
- You must spend under 5 dollars. Extra credit if you spend no money.
- You must include a description
(one typed page AT MOST) of the circuit you use as
it relates to the harmonic oscillator equations.
Paper Airplane:
This is a shortened version of Lab 5.4. You should use the HMSGlider tool on
the disk that came with the text and HPGSystemSolver or other phase plane
drawing program.
- Consider the system of differential equations given in Lab 5.4.
Consider the case of zero drag, compute the equilibria and interpret them
physically.
- Increase D slightly and interpret the
equilibria and other solutions. The best answer will
include "linearization" of the equilibrium.
- Build some paper gliders and determine the value of D which
best models them.
- Your write up can be AT MOST two pages (typed).
