The Ramada Inn is located about two miles from campus and a single
room there runs at about $120. Their website is located at
http://www.ramadachicagohotel.com/ .
The International House is close to the math department (a 5-10 minute walk). The International House
is a dormitory and thus the rooms are fairly small (cozy?) and several rooms on a floor share a single bathroom.
The cost for one night is approximately $50. Their website is located at
http://ihouse.uchicago.edu/
and a map is located at
http://maps.uchicago.edu/east/inthouse.html
For graduate students, we can offer support for Saturday night at the International House.
When registering please indicate if you are interested in staying at the
I.House and we will make
the reservation for you. (The deadline to ask for support is October 1st.)
Driving and parking
General driving directions to the University of Chicago are available
here. (See above for campus maps.)
There is free street parking in Hyde Park. On the weekend it should
be easy to find parking (relatively) close to the math department.
Directions from airports
There are two major airports in the Chicago area, namely Midway
and O'Hare. Midway is by far the fastest and least stressful to get
to which might be worth keeping in mind when choosing between flights.
Midway:
A taxi ride takes 20-30 minutes and costs roughly $20.
There is a city bus that runs from Midway to the University of Chicago.
The bus takes about 45 minutes and costs $1.75.
Keep in mind that this bus runs through the inner-city.
When you board the bus, ask the driver if it
runs all the way to the museum (which is past the university) since the
bus sometimes only goes half way. It is safer to wait for the next bus at the
airport than at the halfway point.
To find the bus at the airport, follow the signs to trains/buses to the
city.
The bus runs along 55th street. Get off at 55th Street and University Ave.
Walk south on University Ave three blocks until you get to
Eckhart Hall
where the math department is located.
O'Hare:
There is a shuttle service called Omega
Shuttle that runs from O'Hare to the University of Chicago.
The Omega shuttle leaves around every hour and costs $25.
The ride takes a little over an hour.
Reservations are needed for the shuttle; call them at (773) 483-6634.
Possible drop-off/pick-up points of the Omega shuttle are the Ramada Inn, the International House
and the Quadrangle Club.
The Quadrangle Club is only one block away from the math department and an ideal drop-off spot if you are
coming to the conference directly from the airport.
***Remember to make a reservation for your trip back to the airport also.***
A taxi costs around $50 and takes about 40 minutes depending on
traffic.
It is also possible to get from O'Hare to the university just by
public transportation but it takes around two hours or more.
