CAS MA 124
Calculus II
All Sections
Fall 2013 Textbook and
On-line Homework System

If you are unsure if MA124 is the right course for you, you should wait until your first lecture before you purchase anything.

Textbook: Briggs and Cochran: Calculus (Early Transcendentals) Pearson/Addison-Wesley, 2011.

On-line homework system: MyMathLab (You can access this course on MyMathLab for 17 days without a passcode. After that, you will need a code. Therefore, a MyMathLab passcode is required eventually for all students.)

There are three options available to you:

  1. An on-line version of the textbook comes with MyMathLab, but you must be connected to the internet to use it. If you feel that you do not need a paper textbook, then all you need is a MyMathLab passcode. MyMathLab passcodes are available from the MyMathLab web site. Internet retailers such as Amazon also sell codes, but some buyers complain that the codes are invalid or have already been used.

We have negotiated a discounted price for a bundled version of the textbook along with a passcode for the on-line homework system. The bundles are available at the BU Bookstore. There are two options that include a paper textbook:

  1. If you plan to take MA225 (Multivariate Calculus) eventually, then you should purchase the hard cover book with the MyMathLab passcode (ISBN 9781269327602). The hard cover book is longer than the soft cover book and contains additional material that is covered in MA225. This bundle is priced at $163. Do not purchase a used textbook unless you can get a good deal on a MyMathLab passcode separately. (Internet retailers such as Amazon sell codes, but some buyers complain that the codes are invalid or have already been used.)

All students in ENG must take MA225.

Majors in CAS that require MA225 are Astronomy, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, any joint major involving Mathematics such as the Mathematics/Economics major, and Physics. MA225 is recommended for the Quantitative Biology major.

Biology, Computer Science, Earth Science, Economics, Geography, and Neuroscience are among the majors that do not require MA225.

In all cases, you should double check the mathematics requirements for your major before you purchase your text. New majors are created frequently, and occasionally requirements change from year to year. Sometimes this is done without our knowledge.

  2. If you do not plan to take MA225, there is a soft cover version of the textbook that is bundled with the MyMathLab passcode (ISBN 9780321709462). The soft covered book is shorter than the hard covered book and does not contain the additional chapters which are covered in MA225. This bundle is available for $106.65. Do not purchase a used textbook unless you can get a good deal on a MyMathLab passcode separately. (Internet retailers such as Amazon sell codes, but some buyers complain that the codes are invalid or have already been used.) Your MyMathLab passcode gives you access to the full three-semester ebook.
