MA 124 Calculus II ---
Spring 2021
This course is the second half of the one-year sequence in calculus.
We study the theory and applications of integration, sequences, series,
and some results about differential equations.
We review the material in Chapter 5 of the text,
and we cover most of the material in Chapters 6-11.
Basic Setup:
All course resources discussed below can be accessed via Blackboard
In Blackboard, you will be able to access two sites - one corresponding to your lecture section MA 124 A1-A3, and one corresponding to the discussion section MA 124 B1-B6.
In the lecture section site, you will see the following tabs:
- Zoom Lectures - where you will be able to access links for the lectures and view recordings
- Pearson MyLab Math - which takes you to Pearson's site which hosts your online homework and E-text
- Campuswire - an online discussion forum where you can ask and answer questions about the course, homework, etc.
Textbook and Pearson MyLab Math on-line homework system: Information regarding the text and homework system.
Lecture Sections:
These sections are the weekly lectures (3 hours/week).
All students must be registered for one of the following
sections.
- A1 (Prof. Kimura): MWF 1:25-2:15 EST in STO B50
- A2 (Prof. Pollack): MWF 12:20-1:10 EST in STO B50
- A3 (Prof. Szczesny): TR 12:30-1:45 EST via Zoom only (Note A3 does not meet in person !)
- Synchronous attendance in lectures is not required but recommended. All lectures will be recorded and made available under the Zoom Lectures tab in Blackboard
- Students wishing to attend Prof. Kimura's or Prof. Pollack's class in-person must use the BU InClassLfA app
Discussion Sections:
- During discussion section, you will work collaboratively with your classmates
on a worksheet based on the material taught in the previous week of lectures.
- You will be asked to submit the work you have done on the worksheets at the end of each discussion section.
- Synchronous attendance for the full duration of the discussion section is required. You must keep your camera on during the entire discussion
- There will be a quiz administered in each discussion section. You can only take the quiz in the discussion section that you are enrolled in.
-
No make-up quizzes will be given for any reason other than work-restricted religious holidays. In particular, no make-up quizzes will be given to students having transferred into the course late. However, your lowest two quiz grades will be dropped at the end of the semester.
- There will be no discussion sections during the first week of class (and therefore no quiz) - discussions will begin on the second week.
- Zoom links for the discussion can be accessed from within the Blackboard site for each of the following discussion sections:

Pearson Tech Support:
-
Pearson provides support services for MyLab Math related issues. You can contact them via
Pearson Online Support or by calling the number

Homework policies:
-
The on-line homework is due weekly. MyLab Math clearly displays the day and
time at
which each assignment is due.
-
For each on-line homework problem,
we strongly recommend
that you write out the problem on a clean sheet of paper,
solve the problem step by step on your paper,
and then enter your answer on-line.
This approach will best provide you with
a written record of how you solved the problems,
a way to show someone your work in case you seek help on the details,
material to use while studying for the tests and exam,
and good practice writing out your work exactly as you will
be required to
on the quiz and exam problems.
-
Extensions to on-line homework will not be granted for any reason
(including a system freeze on the day the homework is due---start your
homework early!).
However, your lowest two homework grades will be dropped at the end of the
semester.
-
If you feel a question was graded incorrectly on MyLab Math,
press the "How to report problem with MML" button and follow the instructions
listed there.
-
All homework and work submitted through MyLab Math must be your own.
Doing otherwise will be considered a violation of the academic conduct code
(see below).
Course announcements:
All general course announcements will be posted to Campuswire.
You are responsible for any information that is posted
there.
Academic conduct:
Your work and conduct in this course are governed by the
Boston University Academic Conduct Code.
This code is designed to promote high standards of
academic honesty and integrity as well as fairness.
It is your responsibility to
know and follow the provisions of the code.
In particular, all work
that you submit in this course must be your original work. If you have a
question about any aspect of academic conduct, please ask.
The LfA format, and in particular, the lack of direct proctoring during tests and exams has been interpreted by certain students as license to violate academic conduct policies. Please consider the following:
- We are well aware of, and constantly monitor sites such as Chegg etc. These sites have all cooperated with BU investigations into academic misconduct
- A large number of students this year have faced serious sanctions as a result of academic code violations
Important dates:
In addition to the test dates mentioned above, please keep in mind that:
- The last day to withdraw from the course without a grade of W is March 1
- The last day to withdraw from the course while
receiving a grade of W is April 2.
- March 18 and March 31 are Wellness days, on which no class will be held.
