Contact information

The best way to contact me is by e-mail. I usually check it at least twice a day. The second best way is to use my cell phone and call 617-694-4335. I do not mind people calling me, as long as they are not advertising anything. However, I may silence the cell phone during the lecture times, and it also turns off spontaneously sometimes, so e-mail is both faster and more reliable.

In case you need to send something to me, here is my local address:

Yakov Shapiro
1160 Commonwealth Avenue, Apt 51
Allston, MA 02134

Education

I am currently a senior at Boston University majoring in mathematics. I will graduate on May 18, 2003, with a B.A. degree in mathematics. In the Fall I will begin graduate study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technonogy.

During the summer 2002 me and professor Kresimir Josic researched the family of perturbed quadratic maps under the supervision of professor Robert Devaney. Here is the report of our findings in PDF format. We relied on a numerical simulation program, which can be located here. I have presented these results at Boston University UROP Symposium 2002 and at RUMBUS03 (the abbreviation stands for Research by Undergraduates in Mathematics Boston University Symposium 2003).

I am currently working on a senior independent project in foliation theory under the supervision of professor David Fried. I will give a talk on what I have learned in that project on April 29, 2003; the place is to be announced.

I participate in the peer tutoring program of Boston University's Educational Resource Center. If you need help with Calculus I, Calculus II, or Linear Algebra, call or e-mail me, and we can schedule an appointment (at no cost for you, if you are a BU student). If you are having trouble with more advanced courses, you can still contact me, and we will see how I can assist you.

Hobbies

I enjoy table tennis, chess, and photography. There are some other things that I liked in the past, but eventually dropped because of lack of time or energy: for example, backpacking, philately, and literary translation (click in the upper right corner of this page to see its Russian equivalent).
