Postdoctoral research position in statistics and machine learning
Where: Jointly at the Faculty of Computing and data Science and the department of Mathematics and Statistics at Boston University.

Position term: Two-year appointment, 2023-2025. Flexible start date.

Description: The Faculty of Computing and data Science at Boston University is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral research position for large scale environmental data modeling. Reliable rainfall predictions have the potential to improve the livelihood and the resilience to weather extremes of millions of people in Africa and other developing countries. However our ability to do these predictions remains stubbornly poor in many parts of Africa. The goal of this research is explore the potential of machine learning and statistics to combine remote sensing data and ground weather sensor data for improved rainfall prediction in West Africa. The position will be under the supervision of Dr. Yves Atchade, Professor of Statistics.

Qualifications: A Phd degree in fields of Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Earth and atmospheric sciences or related fields. Strong data modeling skills, with a great attention to details. Strong technical training in machine learning and statistical modelling, and strong programming skills in Python and Matlab, with a background in processing very large data sets. Familiarity with remote sensing is an advantage. Excellent communication skills, with a track record of writing scientific papers.

To apply: submit a cover letter, a CV, one-page research statement, and three references to atchade@bu.edu.

Equal Opportunity Employer: BU is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions or any other characteristic protected by law.
