The ls -F command shows a graphical description of the
file type. All executable files have a * after the filename.
All directories have a / after their filename. It is important
to realize that these are only symbols and are not a part of the
filename or directory name. Therefore when referencing a filename
in a UNIX command do not include these symbols. For example, here
is the contents of Joe's home directory:
math joe % ls -F
RMAIL* thesis/
math joe %
Note: All new accounts in the Math Department have this
option as the default action, so that new users can easily see what
types of files they have in their directory.
