This is giant clock, accurate to within seconds. The hypotenuse is parallel to the earth's axis of rotation, while the band (pictured here) is coplanar with the earth's equator. The result is that the shadow from the hypotenuse falls directly across the band, and from the location of the shadow, the time can be inferred. |
