This course is the second half of the one-year sequence in calculus. We study the theory and applications of integration, sequences, series, and some results about differential equations.

We review the material in Chapter 5 of the text, and we cover most of the material in Chapters 6-11 of the text.

Thursday evening slot The Thursday 6:30-8:30pm time slot is the time slot that you must reserve for the MA 124 midterm exams. There will be two midterm exams during the semester---one on March 3 and one on April 14 Consequently, this time slot will only be used twice during the semester.

There will also be a final exam on May 11, 6-8 pm during finals week. Please make sure that your travel plans accommodate this final exam.

Lecture Sections: These sections are the weekly lectures (3 hours/week). All students must be registered for one of the following sections.

• A1 (Szczesny): MWF 1:25-2:15 in STO B50
• A2 (Wayne): 12:20-1:10 in STO B50
• A3 (Panth): 12:30-1:45 in STO B50

Discussion Sections: These sections are the "studio-style" discussion sections. All students must be registered for one of the following B sections. Attendance in discussion section is mandatory.

Exams: There will be two midterms and one final exam. The exam schedule is as follows:

Note that the midterms are not during class time, but on two Thursday evenings from 6:30pm--8:30pm. You must make sure you that you have no conflicts during these times as make-ups exams will not given in this course. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE TRAVEL PLANS UNTIL THE FINAL EXAM HAS BEEN SCHEDULED

Quiz: There will be a weekly quiz given at the end of each discussion section.

  Getting help:

  • You are welcome and encouraged to visit the office hours for any of the lecturers for MA 124.
  • The Mathematics and Statistics Tutoring Room, MCS B24, is open approximately 30 hours each week from the second week of classes until classes end. The schedule will be posted here. This room is also a good place to study between classes.
  • The Educational Resource Center (100 Bay State Road) offers free individual and group tutoring. The Center gets very busy as the end of the semester approaches, so it is good to make contact with them earlier rather than later.

  Homework policies:

  • The on-line homework is due weekly. MyMathLab clearly displays the day and time at which each assignment is due.
  • For each on-line homework problem, we strongly recommend that you write out the problem on a clean sheet of paper, solve the problem step by step on your paper, and then enter your answer on-line. This approach will best provide you with a written record of how you solved the problems, a way to show someone your work in case you seek help on the details, material to use while studying for the exams, and good practice writing out your work exactly as you will be required to on the quiz and exam problems.
  • Extensions to on-line homework will not be granted for any reason (including a system freeze on the day the homework is due---start your homework early!). However, your lowest two homework grades will be dropped at the end of the semester.
  • If you feel a question was graded incorrectly on MyMathLab, press the "How to report problem with MML" button and follow the instructions listed there.
  • All homework and work submitted through MyMathLab must be your own. Doing otherwise will be considered a violation of the academic conduct code (see below).

  Discussion section policies:

  • Attendance at discussion sections is mandatory.
  • Discussion sections begin the second week of the semester.
  • Each discussion section will be focused around a worksheet which reviews and goes more deeply into topics discussed during lecture.
  • There will be a quiz during every discussion section (starting the second week of the semester). The quiz will consist of two problems - one based on the homework for the previous week and one based on the worksheet. IF YOU ARE LATE TO DISCUSSION, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE THE QUIZ.
  • No make-up quizzes will be given for any reason other than work-restricted religious holidays. In particular, no make-up quizzes will be given to students having transferred into the course late. However, your lowest two quiz grades will be dropped at the end of the semester.
  • If you are unable to make your discussion section for any reason, you are welcome to attend a different discussion section during that week. However, you will NOT BE ABLE TO TAKE THE QUIZ IN A DISCUSSION SECTION OTHER THAN YOUR OWN .

  Course announcements: All general course announcements will be posted on the MyMathLab web site. You are responsible for any information that is posted there.

  Gradebooks: Your homework grades will be posted on the MyMathLab site, and your exam and quiz grades will be posted on Gradescope. We double check the grades when we record them, but with so many students in this course, it is likely that some errors will be made when grades are recorded. You should check your grades in a regular fashion, for example, once every two weeks. If there is a mistake or you think there is a mistake, please show it to your TF or your lecturer at your next discussion section or lecture. You should keep all of your graded papers until the course grades have been determined. No grades will be changed unless we can review your original papers.

  Make-up exams: Make-up exams in this course will only be administered in those circumstances when University policy requires a make-up to be given. If you must miss an exam for some reason, contact Professor Szczesny soon as possible. A valid reason for missing an exam is something truly exceptional such as athletic participation in a BU varsity sports event or a serious illness.

  Academic conduct: Your work and conduct in this course are governed by the Boston University Academic Conduct Code. This code is designed to promote high standards of academic honesty and integrity as well as fairness. It is your responsibility to know and follow the provisions of the code. In particular, all work that you submit in this course must be your original work. If you have a question about any aspect of academic conduct, please ask.

  Standards of civilized behavior: The lectures and the discussion sections are times that are devoted to learning calculus, and activities that interfere with this process will not be tolerated. For example, you should turn off your mobile phone during these times. Also, you may only use your laptop if such use is permitted by your lecturer or discussion section leaders.

  Important dates: In addition to the exam dates mentioned above, you should know that the last day to withdraw from the course without a grade of W is Feb. 24. The last day to withdraw from the course while receiving a grade of W is April 1.
