Mathematics for Teaching

 

 

 

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study

The School of Education currently offers the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Mathematics Education for teachers who already hold both a license and a master's degree and wish to broaden their understanding of mathematics and mathematics education. Beginning in the summer of 2006, we will offer a specialty in Mathematics for Teaching as a CAGS option in Mathematics Education.

 

The CAGS option in Mathematics for Teaching consists of a minimum of 32 credits and a comprehensive exam, as follows:


Course Requirements

16 credits in Mathematics and Statistics, plus 16 credits in Mathematics Education.
  1. Immersion in Mathematics (8 credits)
    • CAS MA 547: Topics in Number Theory (4 credits)
    • CAS MA 548: Problem Solving in Number Theory (4 credits)
  2. SED CT 760: Contemporary Thought on Curriculum and Teaching (4 credits)
  3. SED ME 558: Mathematics Curriculum: Programs, Issues, Trends (4 credits)
  4. Research and/or Statistics course
  5. Two or more other Mathematics Education courses;
  6. Two or more other courses in Mathematics.

Coursework will emphasize themes in Mathematics for Teaching and will include courses offered jointly by the School of Education and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.


Comprehensive exam:


Issues in Mathematics Education/Mathematics for Teaching.
Candidates will be provided with a reading list before receipt of the exam. At a specified date, candidates will be given the exam questions. The exam paper is due 4 days after receipt. The reading list and the exam questions will vary depending on the student's particular interests and background.
