Images of India - Periyar Lake in Thekkadi, Kerala

Periyar Lake, a man-made lake, is a national preserve which provides protection for a wide variety of animals, such as tigers, elephants and monkeys, to name but a few. Unfortunately, we visited during the wet season, so most of the animals had access to water in the forest itself, and did not need to venture to the lake to drink.

Westerners are not so common in many areas we entered, so wherever I traveled, people would stare at me. Here is a class of high-school students who plucked up the courage to actually talk with me.
