Images of India

October 2003 - January 2004

In October of 2003, my wife Sowmya (who is Indian) and I (an American) took several months leave of absence from our jobs in order to travel to India to visit family and friends, and do some sightseeing as well.

A few technical notes about the images. I took all the photographs with a Canon PowerShot S100, a 2.0 megapixel digital camera, at a resolution of 1600x1200, with some jpeg (lossy) compression. (This is the second best image quality setting on the camera. The best setting uses the same 1600x1200 size, but no compression).

I then used 'convert' (From the ImageMagick group of tools) to down-convert the images to 800x600, with rather more jpeg compression. This greatly reduces the size of the files, so that it would be reasonable to transfer them from India over the relatively slow connection I have access to.

Additionally, some images were postprocessed using the Gnu Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) to adjust brightness/contrast/etc.

IMPORTANT NOTE: On each of the following web-pages, I show only a 400x300 thumbnail of the image, and you can click on the image to see the 800x600 version. Since several of the photos were taken with the camera turned, the resolution of such photos will be effectively 600x800, and so the 400x300 thumbnail will be unduly distorted. In this case, click on the image to see the undistorted 600x800 version.
