The gopuram (decorative top) on top of the Srirangam temple, just outside of Trichy.
Our friend Bala, hanging out inside the Srirangam temple.
Hanuman - The monkey god.
A beautiful carving at the Srirangam temple.
Some pre-Diwali fireworks at an all-girls college that Bala is involved with.
Finally, a real elephant, as seen at Sowmya's family temple, Mannargudi.
A carving at the Tanjore temple, one of the oldest in India, having been completed in 1012CE.
Another view of part of the Tanjore temple. This is a huge temple!
Another carving in the Tanjore temple.
Sowmya and our friends Bala, Puttiman and his wife, and our guide at the far right.
A close-up of some of the intricate stone work of the Tanjore temple. Notice the branch poking through two very small holes in the carving.
Sowmya, in one of the many side passages of the Tanjore temple.
One last view of the temple.
A view of Trichy from a Ganesha temple on the top of a large hill. Getting up here was good exercise! Note all the people on the street below. It's near Diwali (the festival of lamps) and so everyone is out doing their shopping, though I've been informed that it is this busy on a regular basis!
A view of the Kaveri river, as seen from the same Ganesha temple.
A snake we saw crossing the road. Quite small, it was only perhaps a meter in length. I don't think it is poisonous, but I haven't yet positively identified it.
That's all the pictures for our southern excursion, more to follow soon!
