Java versions of dfield and pplane:
Professor John Polking of Rice University has also worked with his
colleagues to produce Java versions of dfield and pplane. The
advantage of the Java versions is that you can run them inside of a
Java-enabled browser. You do NOT need MATLAB! These Java
programs are available at
http://math.rice.edu/~dfield.
If you decide to use these programs, make sure that you have an
appropriate version of Netscape or Explorer. By the way, Professor
Polking's MATLAB routines are also available from that web page, but the
versions that I have placed on ACS are modified to conform to our
notation, so I recommend your going to ACS rather than downloading any
.m files from Rice.
News from U.S. Census Bureau:
The U.S. Census Bureau announced
new population projections
on Thursday, January 13, 2000.
Ghostscript/Ghostview:
You may find it useful to install
Ghostscript/Ghostview
on your home
computer so that you can view and print postscript documents.
MATLAB tool to help you understand eigenvectors:
The MATLAB folks have developed a nice little tool to help with the
conceptual understanding of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. It is called
eigshow.m
. To use it, you simply type eigshow at the MATLAB5
prompt after you have downloaded the file and placed it in an
appropriate directory.
