Texts and Related Sources:Walter Strauss, Partial Differential Equations: an introduction. Wiley. Other material as needed.

We will cover the first six chapters of the book in this course. The first 4 chapters will take a bit more than half the semester. Chapters 5 and 6 will take longer (and be suupplemented with other material).

If material is distributed electronically, it will appear

HERE

Grades: Grades will be distributed as follows

Homework will be assigned more or less weekly (probably 10-12 assignments). I expect *everyone* to do *every* problem. So if you don't know how to do a particular problem, you *must* find out! Deadlines will be assigned for each assignment and will be strict. You are encouraged to form study groups to work on homework--however, you must "write-up" your own solutions (no joint papers or copied solutions!). Also, be sure to list who you worked with on the homework (this is part of Academic Conduct).

The first midterm will come after chapter 4 (a bit past mid semester). The second midterm will be close to the end of the semester and may be take home. (If it is take home, then you must work on it entirely alone.)

As you can tell, this semester "Applied Mathematics" means PDE's and Fourier Series. This is pretty standard. I will try to include as much motivation and applications as time allows.
