(This is actually being updated from the first version written by my predecessor Nicole LaRock in 1996)

Abstract:

This document is intended for new members of the Boston University Mathematics Department. Its main objective is to help new members obtain a quick initial familiarity with their terminals, the Campus Network, and the UNIX Operating System, sufficient to enable them to handle daily departmental mail and produce text documents.

The conditions of use of these machines are dictated by the Department of Mathematics' Computer Committee. Questions of policy should be addressed to that committee.

Conventions used in this document:

  • Items in verbatim text are for the reader to type.
  • Items in bold text are displayed by the computer system.
  • Items in emphasized text are keywords or new vocabulary.
